#3 Bandung Culture: Jaipong Dance

kagumi-bandung-jaipong-dance-02Perhaps to call posts like this “Bandung Culture” is not entirely appropriate, since it is actually “Sundanese” culture and the word Bandung itself does not really belong to the same category as Sundanese or Javanese. Nevertheless, since Sundanese culture is the most dominant culture in Bandung, I think it is not entirely inappropriate name after all… so I will be continue doing it for a while. Hope you all understand :)

Now I want to discuss a bit about one of the most iconic and well-known representations of  Sundanese culture: The Jaipong Dance.

#2 Bandung Culture: Sundanese English

gambar-2Every once in a while, there are things that are just so funny you just can’t help but to laugh. Perhaps because of their absurdity. Perhaps because of their simplicity. Recently, I have found something that I would like to share with all of you; something that I personally found to be quite hilarious.

It is what I like to call “Sundanese English.” As it turns out, there are a lot of words in Sundanese vocabulary, whether they are describing general things or specific stuff like the name of places, when translated directly into English resulted into some hilarious choices of words. If you read on, just think of it as a fun way to add some words into your Sundanese vocabulary.

#1 Bandung Culture: Angklung

angklung-02It is widely known that Sundanese is the culture that is dominantly prevailing in Bandung. Sure, the city also has its own share of people coming from other places in Indonesia where Sundanese is not the main culture, but nevertheless it has perched itself very strongly onto the roots of Bandung, decidedly causing Bandung very Sundanese in its ‘flavor.’ In spirit of celebrating (and honoring) that fact, I would like to dedicate several posts on this blog to informing you some of the Sundanese culture that is prevalent in Bandung.

The first post of this series of posts is dedicated to one of the most famous representations of Sundanese culture in Bandung: Angklung, a wooden traditional Sundanese musical instrument made famous by the simple and yet melodious music it can produce.
