#5 Bandung City: 200 years of Everlasting Beauty
Let us play an experiment. If you have acquaintances in Bandung, call them up and ask this question: “When is the date of Bandung’s birthday?” Most probably, they will not be able to answer the question. Or you can just ask anyone with a Bandung ID or claim themselves as Bandung citizens: I can guarantee you that most of them–if not all–will not be able to answer correctly.
Not that I’d blame them. For me to blame that kind of attitude is like the pot calling the kettle black because in all honesty, even I had to search the answer on the Internet first since I literally did not have a single clue whatsoever about the correct date of Bandung’s birthday. Shameful, I know… though it allays my shame somewhat when I realize that most people in Bandung wouldn’t know it anyway, hahaha.
This kind of unfortunate (but deliberate?) ignorance is exactly the kind of problem that Bandung’s local government is trying to quell with its “Bandung’s 200th years logo competition” event. The plan would then be to put the winner logo on every street banner, announcement board, advertising board, entertainment facilities, etc, etc… basically, to spread it around as much as possible. Hopefully, people will be compelled to look for information about Bandung when they see the logo during their activities in Bandung.
The competition gathered around 232 participants with a total of 311 logo entries. Featuring the theme of “Everlasting Beauty”, Achmad Sutarjono won the competition by being able to garner the most SMS supports from Bandung folks (up to 7976 SMS delivered), defeating Abu Djumhur, Andhika Prawira, Hasan Basri, and Husni Ali. The logo itself is pretty simple but nevertheless slick-looking, with 200 lined vertically and the double zeros form the letter B while the A, N, D, U, N, and G letters that form the word Bandung are written in a creatively designed font.
You can obtain the logo for free at the official site of Bandung government. And oh yeah, in case you are wondering, the date for Bandung’s birthday is September 22nd. Now you know
