#2 The Unpleasant Sides of Bandung
Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009
I will relegate the second post of this series into discussing about something that is in actuality very closely related to the topic that I have discussed earlier in the first post of this series. Whereas the first post discussed about the state of traffic in Bandung (which is, unfortunately, not really agreeable to the concept of proper traffic management), this second post will discuss about the state of pollution that has pervaded the air of Bandung.
Again, the series of Unpleasant Sides of Bandung posts are not intended to scare you off from Bandung, nor they are a representation of me actively intending to prevent anyone from visiting Bandung. Think of them as things that you can use as warnings so that you will not feel deceived when you visit this city—tourism brochures tend to skip stuff like this when they’re informing tourists about the places they represented. Think of them also as something that you can use to prepare yourself accordingly if you really are planning to visit this wonderful (yes, I said wonderful) city.

The Mountain of Oedipus Legend. Kind of like a title of a corny Hollywood movie or a fantasy novel that doesn’t get approved for publication. Surprisingly enough, however, given the context of the (admittedly wacky) story well known amongst Indonesians about how it originated, it may be one title that is suitable enough when one want to refer the famous Tangkuban Perahu Mountain. You’ll see the reason why if you continue to read this post more.
It is widely known that Sundanese is the culture that is dominantly prevailing in Bandung. Sure, the city also has its own share of people coming from other places in Indonesia where Sundanese is not the main culture, but nevertheless it has perched itself very strongly onto the roots of Bandung, decidedly causing Bandung very Sundanese in its ‘flavor.’ In spirit of celebrating (and honoring) that fact, I would like to dedicate several posts on this blog to informing you some of the Sundanese culture that is prevalent in Bandung.
