If you haven’t heard about the buzz going on around you about the benefits or advantages of Green Lifestyle, then I can safely surmise that you have been living under a rock for the last couple of years. It’s a lifestyle garnering recognition in no small part thanks to the growing popularity of Global Warning issues and news all around the world. This kind of lifestyle may prove to be an inconvenience to some, although its detrimental effects in the long run are—according to and believed by many—dwarfed by its positive sides.

Now why is it that I am talking about stuff like this in a Blog that specializes about Bandung?

130869980_acbaf548b1It’s because Bandung—just like a good chunk of the rest of the world—is in the craze about Green Lifestyle. Well, maybe not all parts of Bandung and not a majority of Bandung’s citizens (the fact that Bandung is not exactly the sort of city that can be awarded with Cleanliness Trophy anytime soon kind of makes it hard to say that Green Lifestyle is fully embraced by the people here), but at the very least there’s a growing realization and awareness amongst the people of Bandung that this kind of lifestyle is supportive to the overall good and wellness of the city.

There are now growing amount of companies in Bandung promoting and/or even enforcing Green Lifestyle to their employees. What’s there not to like? Stuffs like using two sides of a paper sheet to print documents instead of just one or increasing the Air Conditioning temperature from 17 degrees Celcius to 20 degrees Celcius everyday may seem to be insignificant individually, but stack them all together in one unison and there is a very good chance a company can and will shave a healthy dose of operational costs.

There is also an idea that is gaining popularity in Bandung that in cahoot with the idea of Green Lifestyle. The theme of that idea is “Ride a Bicycle”—that is, trying to use bicycle as much as possible as the preferred means of transportation so that the level of pollution at least can be alleviated somewhat. That means going to and from work, going to the movies, going to the shopping malls, going to the grocery store—if possible and as much as possible all of them is carried out with a bicycle. Recently, the more popular type of bicycle is what the locals called “Onthel Bikes” (look on the second picture below for an example), an antique kind of bike that is reminiscent to the pre-independence era of Indonesia. They prove to be quite popular city tours are even designed around them, but that is for another post.

The support for Go Green movement from the government is there, like for example Tree Planting Programs such as this or making contests such as this. Unfortunately—as in most other cases—they would do better to increase it and actually try to implement policies that do not contradict their act of support (allowing so many Hotels and shopping centers to be built is not exactly an eco-friendly policy.)
